Detoxification is the process of allowing the body to rid itself of a drug while managing the symptoms of withdrawal. It is often the first step in a drug treatment program and should be followed by treatment with a behavioral-based therapy and/or a medication, if available. Detox alone with no follow-up is not treatment.

Withdrawal is the variety of symptoms that occur after use of some drugs are reduced or stopped. Length of withdrawal and symptoms vary with the type of drug. For example, physical symptoms of heroin withdrawal may include: restlessness, muscle and bone pain, insomnia, diarrhea, vomiting, and cold flashes. These physical symptoms may last for several days, but the general depression, or dysphoria (opposite of euphoria) that often accompanies heroin withdrawal may last for weeks. In many cases withdrawal can be easily treated with medications to ease the symptoms, but treating withdrawal is not the same as treating addiction.

We live in a world where many of us just go through the motions, day after day, sometimes never asking ourselves why? We go to jobs we intensely dislike, get married, have kids, buy a house, go into debt, because that is what we are supposed to do.

Society offers us a subliminal message, that says - if we conform, and sign up for all the "stuff", we will be happy. And why shouldn't we, everyone else is doing it, and they seem ok. It is actually the life that some people really want, and God bless them. Some people really want to have children, and actively, lovingly care for them. However, how can we explain all the other instances of domestic abuse and child abuse? How can we explain the drunk driving, rise in addiction among teens and young people, the shopaholics, the debt, the high divorce rate, and more, if this lifestyle was actually the optimum for everyone?

Eventually the day comes, and as we endure our daily-day in-day out commute, while sitting in bumper to bumper traffic, driving home from jobs we hate and have long sense outgrown, to spouses who are now just angry room mates, with 3 kids that only want the latest Niki's at 150.00 a pair, and the conversation in our homes revolve around the lack of money, and why we are 3 mortgage payments behind on our dream homes, which we knew we really had no business buying in the first place. Now, as good as time as any, we ask ourselves WHY?!

Hmmmmm, good place to start. Why? Could it be for all the wrong reasons? How did we get sucked into this, while all the while not even being aware it was happening? It's ok to ask the question why, because most of us have bought into the lie, and more of us continue to sign up for it everyday. Some people, however can go their entire lives and never ask why. They will continue to go though the motions in drone like-robotic fashion, until the day they finally die. In fact, most people live lives of quiet desperation. Maybe that is why we drink so much alcohol, buy things we don't need, hurt others, eat too much and more.

The addiction to the approval of others. Could that be our paramount addiction, driving all the others?

Victims are still trying to feel better “from the outside in”, to satisfy their insatiable desire to feel better-to feel anything. Victims are ususally selfish and it never occurs to them to give anything unless it is a manipulation to acquire something they want. The older more deceptive victims / or entitled ones, will usually have an agenda, and that is how we can see what is really going on, once we examine their motives in any exchange with them. A self serving victim would never call you just to say hello, and of true partnership they know little.

Victim's tend to live in their own little worlds, where the people in charge, the ones they refer to as “they”, are the powers to be. The “they people”, this invisible or identified external force is completely responsible for their woes, and their sad stymied, or over indulged lives. Usually these people are very much out of touch with normal reality. One woman still wants to “get” her ex husband for ruining her life, and she has been divorced from him for over 30 years. To talk to her, you would think it happened last week. She is stuck. This is an extreme example, and there are many levels of victim hood that fall in between the shades of gray. Studies show that people who are committed to raising their level of spirituality and awareness by way of 12 step programs, religious affiliations and more affect society in a super positive way.

People who have moved from having a lower, more negative way of thinking and being in the world, to being positive and life affirming experience life differently.

Society benefits from these spiritually committed positive people with drops in unemployment rates from 50% to only 8%. Crime is dramatically reduced from 50% to 9%, and the rate of poverty drops among these individuals from 22% to 1.5%.

Other benefits to the world in important areas of life include: educational level, marital success, social approval, reputation, personal appearance, language style, credit rating, home ownership, social views, initial impression and more.
